Permeability of subducted oceanic crust revealed by eclogite-facies vugs

چکیده

Abstract We report the finding of rare eclogite-facies vugs forming millimeter- to centimeter-sized pockets in meta-ophiolites from western European Alps. Euhedral garnet crystals covering vug walls display oscillatory chemical zoning for a wide range major and trace elements, including Cr, Mn, earth elements. Thermodynamic modeling revealed that closed-system fluid production through breakdown prograde glaucophane, lawsonite, chlorite between 505 °C 525 can successfully explain porosity creation ~4% mineralogical properties vugs. Available geologic geochronologic constraints indicate eclogitization downgoing mafic crust spanned window at least 1 m.y. These observations only be explained by presence extremely low permeability values (<10−22 m2) keep confined meter scale within on such time scales. Our field-based eclogite provides first situ confirmation previous experimental data geophysical estimates active margins. A substantial amount trapped this may carried deeper than expected into Earth's mantle, with implications volatile recycling budgets.

Permeability within Basaltic Oceanic Crust

Water-rock interactions within the seafloor are responsible for significant energy and solute fluxes between basaltic oceanic crust and the overlying ocean. Permeability is the primary hydrologic property controlling the form, intensity, and duration of seafloor fluid circulation, but after several decades of characterizing shallow oceanic basement, we are still learning how permeability is cre...

Seismic array detection of subducted oceanic crust in the lower mantle

[1] We analyze short-period precursory energy to PP that can be observed in seismograms in the distance range from 95 to 105 to infer the behavior of subducted slabs beneath western Pacific subduction zones. PP is a P wave once reflected at the free surface between the source and receiver. Using high-resolution seismic array techniques, we analyze the incidence angle, timing, and azimuth of the...

The difficulty for subducted oceanic crust to accumulate at the Earths coremantle boundary

[1] Seismic tomography has revealed two large low shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs) in the lowermost mantle beneath the central Pacific and Africa. The LLSVPs are further shown to be compositionally different from their surroundings. Among several hypotheses put forth in recent years to explain the cause of the LLSVPs, one postulates that they are thermochemical piles caused by accumulation of ...

Paleo-Asian oceanic slab under the North China craton revealed by carbonatites derived from subducted limestones

It is widely accepted that the lithospheric mantle under the North China craton (NCC) has undergone comprehensive refertilization due to input from surrounding subducted slabs. However, the possible contribution from the Paleo-Asian oceanic slab to the north is poorly constrained, largely because of the lack of convincing evidence for the existence of this slab under the NCC. We report here car...

Eclogite-facies fluid infiltration: constraints from dO zoning in garnet

In situ analysis reveals that eclogite-facies garnets are zoned in dO with lower values in the core and rims that are *1.5 to 2.5 % higher. This pattern is present in 9 out of 12 garnets analyzed by SIMS from four orogenic eclogite terranes, and correlates with an increase in the mole fraction of pyrope and Mg/Fe ratio from core to rim, indicating prograde garnet growth. At the maximum temperat...
